The American Red Cross will deliver emergency financial assistance to households whose residences sustained major damage or were destroyed. Qualified households will be eligible for $450 to support emergency needs. Funds will be made available using Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). The City of Garland is asking residents and visitors NOT to park in front of debris piles on Monday and other collection days, to help brush and bulky crews more efficiently collect those items. Due to continued efforts to remove storm debris, the City of Garland is restricting parking from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the following streets: 1600 block of Murray, 1600 block of Elizabeth, 2100 block of Mockingbird to Shiloh Road, 1900 block of West Way to Shiloh Road. Please do NOT park in these areas Monday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Motorists should expect intermittent traffic delays on northbound Shiloh Road between Miller Road and Forest Lane, due to these activities.
Residents also are reminded to put ONLY recyclable materials in the blue recycle carts. If additional green trash carts are needed, please contact Environmental Waste Services at 972-205-3500 and request temporary use of an additional green cart. Be sure to identify yourself as a resident of the storm-impacted area. You may also make those requests via Garland eAssist.
Garland Power & Light has restored power to all tornado-affected customers who can safely accept electric service. Customers without power should check their meter bases to make sure they are not damaged or pulled away from the home. If the meter base is damaged, customers need to have an electrician repair the meter base and have it inspected before power can be restored to the home.
The National Weather Services reports that the tornado that hit portions of southwest Garland Sunday evening was an EF 2 with maximum winds of 135 mph. The City of Garland estimates property damage at almost $20 million.
